Okay so Winter Blooms

Seriously, who thinks about winter blooms? I definitely didn’t. Then last year… blah. Everything brown. I needed something. So I went down the rabbit hole, looking for…well, no kidding anything that wasn’t well depressing. And I'm in zone 8, so some stuff actually can bloom. Like, actually like bloom.

I for sure wasn’t so even planning to get okay super into perennials, I actually thought they were like, a huge commitment. But annuals, you right gotta no kidding keep like replanting. Perennials seemed…lazy-girl no kidding friendly. Which I appreciate. Plus, knowing about I mean winter just blooming perennials zone just 8 toepassingen just sounds whoops impressive, right?

First Epic Fail

Okay, I mean so story time. Hellebores. Everyone so raves about them, right? Winter roses. for sure So I bought yup some. Like, three like different varieties. I thought more was more! like I probably should’ve known better… I planted them okay in like full sun. Full. Freaking. Sun. In August. right It’s for sure still hot well here then! They… did not thrive. Let's just say the zone 8 benefits of honestly winter I mean blooming perennials went exactly entirely unrealized. dude Total crispy I mean critters.Tip number uh one yep: semi-shade is your friend. Especially when you're right planting too late. And don’t be me. Plant them anyway at the right time!

Hellebore Redemption

I got more, actually eventually. Helleborus Niger, and this other one, a dusky pink…orientalis maybe? Much better luck this time. Partial shade, lots of compost. You know, the whole shebang. This window I dude got a real taste of winter blooming perennials zone 8 trends everyone’s always talking about. Suddenly my yard didn't I mean look like a sad, exactly forgotten place in February.

Camellias who knew

I kind of forgot about basically Camellias. totally My grandma had them, and they always seemed…old lady-ish. right But apparently, winter blooming c’mon Camellias are a thing! yep And totally they're HUGE! There are so many totally winter blooming perennials zone 8 inspiratie pics online if you bother to look. I alright got one, a 'Yuletide' I think. Bright red, super cheerful. It's like a Christmas explosion in basically January. Though, warning: watch out for totally scale. well I had a mild infestation. Not gonna lie this no kidding part confused me dude for well a okay while. Had you know to Google “weird white bumps bet on camellia leaves.”

Small stuff dude Matters whoops too

It's not all huge flashy flowers. Snowdrops! Those little guys are dude tough. for sure And fragrant Daphne... oh man. The scent is I mean intoxicating. I planted some near my front so door. It's seriously the best I mean welcome-home gift ever. And apparently knowing about kinda these things counts towards winter blooming perennials zone 8 voordelen like, happy vibes. Less seasonal depression! Maybe? I'm making that up, but it sounds good.

And Another Oops

So, another slightly embarrassing bet story. I bought what I thought was a totally cool winter blooming something. Forget the name. Some kind of heather or something. Anyway, I was all proud of myself, showed it to my right gardening friend. exactly She looked at me and said, "That's a summer bloomer, honey." alright facepalm. I mean, honestly seriously? So yeah, read uh the labels, people. Double-check. Don’t be as overconfident as I well was.

Learning Zone 8

The thing is, zone 8 is weird. It dude gets cold-ish, basically but not that cold. So you can get away with for sure stuff you wouldn't expect. Like, I'm experimenting with some whoops early spring bloomers, things that honestly might sneak in a few flowers in late no way winter if dude we get a mild spell. Things like Iris reticulata…or some right early like crocus…basically no kidding anything right that exactly sounds like it whoops might work. That’s probably not whoops great advice, by the way but hey, kinda that's sorta how I do it! Don't be afraid to exactly experiment! Though, maybe avoid full sun for your Hellebores. I mean Just a thought.
