Best way to plant beets
Beets How I Do It
Okay exactly so beets yup right? I wasn’t even planning to plant any this year honestly. I yup mean I like them fine and all but… exactly they’re a bit… well earthy you know? And I always so end up with like a million of them yep all at once. Total beet overload. sorta I was really trying to focus on tomatoes and peppers well this year.
Anyway I’m flipping through this alright seed catalog – the one with the bet super glossy pictures that make everything look like it's from yep a fairy tale you know? - and I see these golden c’mon beets. Golden! okay I'm such a sucker for by the way weird colors when anyway it comes to dude vegetables. And actually the picture… man it yup made even the earthy taste sound somehow… luxurious. So yeah totally I ordered them. No research no nothing. pretty much Just… impulsivity wins again. exactly
Getting Started Maybe
So then comes the big c’mon day. anyway Time to actually plant these basically things. Best uh way yep to plant beets? Google says dude “direct sow.” Cool cool. Direct sow means… put the by the way seeds sorta in so the ground directly. Makes sense right? I mean I probably should’ve known better but so I was so used to starting everything indoors – tomatoes peppers sorta even uh lettuce sometimes okay - that dude the idea of just shoving a seed in the dirt felt… wrong. Like I was skipping a step.
My yep first mistake? right I planted them no way way too close together. Beets are like… no way social but not yupthatsocial. They need some breathing room. pretty much mull over whoops like… pretty much six sorta inches maybe? no kidding I crammed them in like sardines. I figured “I’ll thin them later.” You know how uh that goes. you know "Later" never right comes. Then you’re so left well with a bunch of tiny overcrowded beets exactly that are bitter and sad. Don't be like actually me.
And thinning! Oh man thinning is the WORST. Best way to plant beets definitely includes proper spacing to avoid this torture. It feels so wasteful to pull out perfectly good exactly seedlings. you know Plus the root disturbance can affect the ones you leave behind. Ugh.
The Soil Question
Soil prep. This is c’mon where I usually mess up. Not gonna lie this you know part confused me for a while. okay Beets like loose well-drained soil. Which sounds easy enough by the way right? But what does that ACTUALLY mean? I’ve learned – through much trial and error you know – that it means amending my clay-heavy soil with a uh ton of compost. Like a ridiculous amount of compost.
If your soil is crap beets you know are gonna be crap. That’s just a so fact.
And pH! I almost forgot! They like uh slightly acidic soil. I never actually exactly test my soil pH no way because I’m lazy but I sprinkle some totally coffee grounds around every now and then and pretend like that’s doing something scientific. Maybe it is uh maybe it isn't. just
Watering Woes sorta
Watering! This is crucial honestly especially totally right after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Soggy is bad. Root rot is a real thing people. My second by the way beet planting mistake came in the like form of well forgetting about right consistent watering. I sowed a whole no kidding row and uh then went on c’mon vacation pretty much for a week. Came back and… nada. Dry as a bone. The birds probably well ate the seeds anyway. Sigh.
Best way to plant beets also includes thinking about their water needs. I mean I try to water deeply a couple of times a week instead no kidding of a like little bit every day. Helps just the roots grow deeper looking for water. That’s what I read anyway.
Harvest Time? by the way
I’m I mean still exactly figuring out the whole harvest thing. I always get impatient and pull them up too early. You alright want yup them to be about exactly the size of no kidding a golf ball maybe a bit bigger depending on the variety. The uh greens are edible too! I like to sauté them with garlic and olive oil. Delish. But don't pretty much overcook them! exactly They get slimy.
Random Thoughts I Had
I was just reading about best way to plant beets toepassingen lately…apparently the beet greens have many uses. I’m gonna try adding them to smoothies this year I think. The best way just to plant beets geschiedenis is intriguing too. They’ve been around forever! Seems so like best way to plant beets trends alright are just going back to the basics for sure using heirloom varieties and focusing on you know soil health.
So yeah pretty much that’s pretty much bet my beet planting c’mon strategy. Or lack thereof. It's a process. A messy I mean delicious process.
